Susan Jackson Family

“While very young I was convinced that paintings on the walls at home were painted by the people who lived there! “ As the child of a research scientist who did ink drawings of wildlife and carved for Ducks Unlimited, she learned to appreciate detail.

Susan finds inspiration in nature and from travel; she now works in several mediums. “The textures and moods created by light define my subjects-and it’s quite a challenge to capture that drama.”

She has attended workshops with Catherine Anderson, Judy Betts, Carl Dalio, Cheng Ki-Chee, Stephen Quiller, Nita Engle, and Kathie George and since has launched her own interests and styles.

Working from her studios on Galveston Island and in Houston, Texas, Susan considers “creating art a privilege and one of the healthiest things” she does.

Susan describes one event that shows the benefit of painting on health: “Upon my father’s death a nephew handed me a half-finished oil my father had begun for him. I assured him I’d finish it (as it was the campanile of the university where he was about to graduate) even using my father’s paints. What a surprise it was to find this project help with the grieving process! The painting released a profound sense of aloneness at losing an artist soul-mate and anger at his sudden departure in my absence. Putting brush to canvas brought healing of those difficult emotions.”
